How to clear a path through a forest, and other HGTV yard ideas?

In short, I want to clear a path through the forest in my back yard. I want the path to branch off in several places and lead to different little scenic spots. I am aware that this is a HUGE project, but I want to do it. My mother loves to go on walks and this has always been a dream of hers to have something like this. I am fairly outdoorsy and strong, I just don't know how to go about clearning a path through a forest. Everything in the forest is currently dead so I thought it might be a good time to get started. If you could, please explain in detail how to clear a walking path that will last for years.

Also, at the end of each section of the path I want to have different outdoor serene places to relax. I was thinking of making a small pond by digging a hole and patting sand on all edges, adn then putting rocks around the edge. I need other ideas too please!! (and help on that idea) I always see cool simple ideas when I flip the channel to HGTV, but I canit remember any clearly! please help. How to clear a path through a forest, and other HGTV yard ideas?

It would take about 5 pages to even begin to explain to you how to do this.
You will need a large tractor and a lot of helpers.
You have a nice idea. I have trimmed the bottoms of pine trees over the summer. The bottoms of the trees were dead. I am putting assorted shade plants and ground covers in front of them.

You need pro help with the pond in the woods. The wetness will rot the roots around some of the surrounding trees. You will have a very big problem if there is not proper distance from the trees.

Some people have left the stump of a tree and made it into a table or seating area. I have seen a tree that died, but the person took off the branches and left part of the trunk. On the trunk there were fancy colored bird houses where the branches were removed.

Hint: Look for seed and plant swaps on the net to ad some variety and spice to your trail!

Good luck with your project.
This is a big project so start small. Walk through the woods until you know where you want your path to be. Pay attention to unusual features, or things you think are interesting. Look for natural clearings, or landmarks that seem to be made for sitting on.

Usually you'll find paths already exist naturally such as deer trails. If you find something interesting you want your path to wander off to, use string to mark a path to that landmark. Just walking your chosen trail once a day will make it more pronounced.

Now as for clearing a trail, this isn't something that necessarily takes a lot of strength. Are you creating path so that your mother can enjoy the journey or the destination? It's probably a bit of both. Walking in the woods is a experience in itself, and part of the joy of it lies in twisting, turning little paths leading onwards to your destination.

Make your path go around obstacles, not through them. When you find an obstacle that's too large to wander around have fun clearing your trail and be creative. A large tree could have the middle hacked out, or a rope bridge going over it. Maybe that large tree is the destination and you've drilled little holes it it, glued or wedged sticks in the holes and hung wind chimes or birdhouse's in them.

Once you've clearly established where you want your trail to be walk it every day. Step on plants growing on your trail, and drag sticks to the side. Don't worry about making your path really large in the beginning, just focus on clearly defining where it is. Take a hatchet and hack away at sturdier bush's and undergrowth. (For now, once you start building them you may never stop!)

Making your path last a long time would be pretty tough, and I'm not sure it's worth it. Your going to be constantly battling new plants and undergrowth. Concrete is one way to impose a little permanency, but if people don't walk the trail regularly it'll just get overgrown.

Have fun with your path and make plenty of little branching destinations. I'm sure that what to put in them will come to you slowly, as you start to savor and understand unique characteristics that made you choose each place as a destination.
